The School of Architecture designed for the Lviv National Academy of the Arts featured a primary design goal of adaptive reuse of a portion of the existing school.
This design focuses on removing a central portion of the existing school to create the central studio union space, in which it can connect the urban street and the courtyard together. Extrusion of the existing structure upwards and leaving the east portion of the project in tact to highlight the history of the existing building.
Massing of the proposed school would continue upwards through a mixture of heavy timber structure and a concrete core. Adjustable wood screening on the exterior would allow students to change the fabric of the building to suit their preferences, and also function as protective cover in the scenario of an attack.
